Chinese Zhong Kui Painting
Zhong Kui(Chung K'uei), a deity who protects human from evil spirits according to the Chinese folklore, that is the most well-known deity for Chinese. Folks often hang painting of Zhong Kui in their houses for home-guarding and blessing. It is said that Zhong Kui is of ugly looks with black face and curly bread, but is awful, learned and clever. He always in red embroidered robe and wear a black gauze cap flanked by a pair of decorative wings, holding no fears for evil things and good at exorcism.
Paintings of Zhong Kui are mainly related to five subjects: travel or move (house); marry off his sister; five ghosts play tricks on Zhong Kui; drunk Zhong Kui and pray for good luck.
Follow are some examples of the subject of praying for good luck.
1. When Zhong Kui is combined with Pixiu (called Bixie in the north of China, a mythological animal that herald in good fortune and keep evil at bay), they symbolize that money and treasures will be plentiful and will not lose. That's fave for businessman.
2. If Zhong Kui holds Ruyi(an S-shaped ornamental object ,usually made of jade, or gold, or bamboo, ect, formerly a symbol of good luck), the meaning is success.
3. When Zhong Kui hiting a chime stone, meaning auspiciousness.
4. If Zhong Kui is drinking, that expresses a hope of permanence.
5. The combination of Zhong Kui and bat is the most familiar design for the hope of blessing. In order to match Zhong Kui's character, painter always paint Zhong Kui lunge at bat with sword. That is not means that Zhong Kui want to kill bat. It expresses a wish that hope good fortune comes early.
